Arbor Fuel Inc. is developing microbial strains and processes to produce various fuels from biomass. We are applying the power of biotechnology to generate microorganisms and processes to enable the commercial production of next-generation alternative fuels. The microorganisms that we develop will use biomass as an environmentally sensitive and economically sensible feedstock for fuel production. These patented microorganisms will be used in commercial biorefineries to generate long-term revenue either directly by Arbor Fuel or through partnerships with established commercial producers of biofuels.
Recent advancements in microbiological processing of cellulose based plant material have opened this opportunity for the conversion of biomass into next generation fuels and industrial solvents. Traditionally, this research has been done with a limited set of organisms that carry out a specific desired function and searching for a mutant strain that may do it better – this is the approach taken by most of our competitors. Arbor Fuel Inc. has risen out of the post genomics era where genes, proteins and pathways can be manipulated and moved from one organism to another. A difficulty in utilizing biomass is the lack of environmentally friendly methods for converting these underutilized plant materials cost effectively. Starting with the same yeast used to make beer, wine and bread, Arbor Fuel Inc. has already developed a strain that can grow on and digest cellulose and produce ethanol at greater than 90% of the theoretical maximum yield. We are currently in the process of engineering new yeast strains that will produce butanol, a second generation biofuel with superior properties to ethanol. Our approach is very robust, maximizing on the latest in molecular biology technologies while utilizing well-understood processes and techniques.
